The Process of making Heart's Depth has been an incredible learning experience for me as a game developer. As my largest-scale project to date, it's gone from a simple game jam demo to something greater than I could have ever imagined it to be.
As a director, a writer, and a coder, I've had my hands everywhere in this project, and I could not be happier to have been a part of bringing this project to life.
The original concept stemmed from director Alibunn's suggestion that we make a deep sea creature otome. From there, I put together some of my ideas for what could happen, drawing inspiration from The Little Mermaid and Cinderella Phenomenon. Code-named "Deep Sea Otome", we started to get to work on writing what might happen in this world of mermaids and humans. This, of course, spiraled into a ten-page document filled with snippets and ideas that eventually got refined into what the game is today.
Building the Story:
The idea was simple: girl goes out to sea, gets dragged into the water, and becomes a mermaid so she can date hot mermaid men. And thus, our protagonist girl, an evil sea witch, an emo mermaid prince, and the royal advisor were born. From the start, we knew the prince would be a pivotal character, and so he got developed the most in our early documents. We needed someone who could be the moon to the protagonist's sun, and a natural foil for the cheery photographer was a colder royal with a tragic past. For him, Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Dimitri Blaiddyd from Fire Emblem: Three Houses were the primary inspirations. Our prince would turn into Prince Thioran, heir to the throne with no love for humans.Once we had a general direction, the research began. I looked into other games like what we were planning to make, and I was shocked to see there really weren't many mermaid games out there, and even fewer mermaid otome games.
Building the Team:
Our team started out with quite a few people, actually. I was surprised at how many of my friends were willing to join the team and help make this game come to life. From the start, we had a team of ELEVEN artists, writers, coders, and voice actors. Though we didn't keep everyone from the initial sign-up, today our team is still going strong with FOURTEEN members and growing.Managing that many people is a challenge I've never had to face before, but I've been able to learn from my team and continue improving on how we approach the game. Task lists, spreadsheets, and frequent meetings have been the most successful strategies I've applied to Heart's Depth.
